So what sets them apart? The origin. Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth over billions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks. Despite the difference in formation, both types of diamonds have the same crystal structure, hardness, brilliance, and fire.
In fact, the differences between natural and lab-grown diamonds are so minimal that they can only be detected with highly specialized equipment. Gemologists can identify subtle variations in growth patterns, but to the naked eye—and even under magnification—they look exactly the same.
One key difference lies in the way lab-grown diamonds form. These diamonds grow upward from a flat surface, rather than outward like natural diamonds. This results in slightly different internal features that help gem labs determine the diamond’s origin. But again, these differences are invisible to consumers.
Lab-grown diamonds typically take about a week to grow into a one-carat stone, making them a faster and more sustainable alternative to mining. Because the production process is more efficient and doesn’t involve excavation, lab-grown diamonds are often priced 20–40% lower than their natural counterparts.
